Work or play
You'll find everything here to do it.
To ensure we create a coastal community with a sustainable future, much effort has been devoted to planning the necessary amenities and support services required.
Within the Waterways we plan to create an island with varied specialty retail bars, cafes and accommodation. Inspiration for the concept is drawn from Mediterranean ports and blended with New Zealand architectural styles. It will be a pedestrian friendly zone with the only vehicles permitted being electrically driven carts.
A dry stack berth facility will be created to offer covered storage for craft up to 10 m. The building will be situated in a Marine Precinct that will offer a limited range of small scale ancillary marine services.
A superior medical/accident emergency facility is planned for a strategic corner site on Joan Gaskell Drive. Day surgery and associated specialist support services will be encouraged.
Whitianga Waterways' comprehensive vision includes the following ingredients:
- Affordable dry block sites enable entry into and benefit from Waterways amenities including shared private boat ramps without the premium price tag of waterfront living.
- Comprehensive residential development - Limited and complementary to the waterways neighbourhood. This type of housing will be restricted and discretionary to avoid adverse affects on conventional home sites, yet allow for affordable entry in to canal development and broaden community mix.
- Architecture - A range of housing types and forms will be encouraged to achieve variety.
- Neighbourhood and local reserves to enhance public access to canal network and recreational opportunities with neighborhood beaches. Reserves to be within a 5 minute walk of any waterways home.
- Retirement village - Why give up boating at a time when you can enjoy it most? That is why we have planned New Zealand’s first waterfront retirement village with its own jetties and beach.
- Airpark - Fly in and park on your own private hangar. Not only will you beat the traffic, you could enjoy the convenience of having your aircraft at home.
- Canal front sites - For the devoted boat owner, there is nothing like the convenience of having your boat moored at home on your own private jetty.
- Commercial retail - A Venetian style retail island which will feature tourist and visitor orientated activities is planned. The island’s buildings will have boutique retail and hospitality space on the ground floors and a mix of short and long term and residential accommodation above. Access will primarily be by boat or walking. Other than permanent resident’s underground parking and delivery vehicles, motor vehicles will not be allowed on the island.
- Marine dry stack - A multi level boat dry stack and service facility is planned. It will be capable of housing craft up to 10m.
- Hotel - An international standard tourist hotel is planned for construction on a 2 h.a. site adjoining Joan Gaskell Drive and close to the airfield.
